The flute is the one instrument that resembles the human voice the closest. I have used it often to add orchestra color to simple works or larger arrangements as well. It is an instrument that sings with clarity and is capable of amazing gymnastics as well as lilting legato passage work, all the while producing a pleasing and warm tone. It is no wonder that many young musicians choose it as their first instrument, and that so many composers find such a prominent place for it in their works. The few pieces presented here are all easily within the technical range of a moderately-skilled student flautist and the piano scores all serve to support rather than dominate the soloist.
