One of the wonders—miracles, really—of living in the so-called “digital age” is the fact that composers everywhere now have access to marvelous sound modules and plug-ins that simulate the timbre and ambiance of acoustical instruments and give composers a “ready orchestra” 24-7 in order to realize their creative thought in sounds that are becoming increasingly “authentic.” The old ad years ago, “Is it real, or is it Memorex?” is suddenly (maybe even frighteningly so) no longer just a dream.

In this section of my website, you will find a number of printed scores for (primarily) solo instruments and piano. In the Audio Gallery (as well as sprinkled throughout the songs-you-can-download sections) I will also include an occasional mp3 “digital realization” of an orchestration that, had I the physical resources available, I would have recorded acoustically. I hope you will enjoy what you find here. I’d love to hear from you, so don’t be shy about dropping me an e-mail.

THE PAINTED VIOLIN PROJECT – FORT WORTH SYMPHONY ART AUCTION (2008)

Artist Name: Edwin Ackermann

Title of Work: In Memory of Schindler

The violin possesses magic to stir our souls. Those of us who saw Steven Spielberg’s academy award winning 1993 film, Schindler’s List, quickly recall the violin music composed by John Williams and played so hauntingly by Itzhak Perlman. That violin music stirred the emotions of audiences around the world and instilled unified determination to prevent such horrors from ever happening again. The film tells the story of German businessman, Oskar Schindler, who saved the lives of over a thousand Polish Jews during the Holocaust. The film is in black and white except singling out a wandering small girl in cold winter wearing a red coat - the color of life’s blood soon to be no more. And so, my painted violin, muted as if dusted with white snow, holds a white rose in memory of Schindler and the blood of lives he saved.
