* Historical note: Ludwig II, King of Bavaria (1856—1886) never actually had a throne in this room...or anywhere in his 19th century castle. He is, though, sometimes called “the Swan king” and, of course, “Crazy Ludwig” because of rumored mental illness and a propensity to spend all of his subjects’ money on royal extravagance like his fairytale castle. This musical suite, however, is decidedly NOT about him. Rather, it is a fanciful homage to a mythical king as seen through the eyes of a peasant subject.
