I first heard the English horn when I arranged some music for church service some years ago. The upshot of that experience was the creation of a small collection of “songs” for E horn and piano which are presented below. The rich color of this instrument and its smooth, velvety sound belies the difficulty of playing the instrument well, requiring, as it does, a lot of air to sustain the tone. However, for those who have learned the skills required of this wonderful instrument—and for those of us who experience that sound—the rewards are great. I hope this small collection of English horn music finds a few enthusiastic devotees who will enjoy the challenge of learning something heretofore unheard in the literature.
